summer school: High School Credit Completion
This is a chance for high school students to complete graduation requirement credits or make up credits they’ve missed or failed previously. Summer school classes are rigorous and include many kinds of assignments and lessons to keep students interested and engaged in learning. Additionally, there will be outside activities and field trips to complete the full hour requirement. Classes will be constructed to meet our usual 120 hours per credit, using a combination of one-on-one lessons, field trips, and homework (as desired by the family). Details regarding the number of hours to be completed using various methods will be discussed during your initial consulting session with one of PHC's directors. To learn more about unique classes PHC offers and what requirements they fulfill check out our Specialty Classes.
Summer Specialty Classes
PHC's directors have developed several classes especially for summer learning. These courses focus on specific skills that are important for children to have, but also focus on having fun while learning. It is summer, after all! These specialty summer classes are typically 2 weeks long and include 12 hours of total instruction over that time (specific days and times can be arranged with one of our directors). The price for these classes when being taught to small groups will be $300 per child as long as the group has a minimum of 3 students. These classes can also be taught to individual students for $75 per hour, for a total of $900 for the complete course. All classes will have flexible scheduling that a PHC teacher will work out with parents or group leaders, and we also work with families on payment plans that best fit your needs. Read below to see the Specialty Summer Class offerings.
Summer Beach Reading
One reason many children and teens don’t like reading is that they don’t know where to look for good books. In this summer class your child will have the opportunity to learn how to choose books for enjoyment instead of just reading what is assigned to them. The more a child enjoys reading a book, the more he or she will read in life. Additional skills to be gained include improved comprehension skills, analysis of literary elements, and understanding genres of literature. This class begins with an assessment of each student’s reading ability level and ends with the completion of a “reading passport” of books the student is excited about.
Writing Campfire Stories
Who doesn’t love telling interesting stories to their friends? Silly stories, scary stories, even sad stories can be fun to tell when you have storytelling skills. The goal of this class is to help students improve storytelling skills through both written and oral tales. Students will learn key elements of telling a good story and keeping the audience’s interest. Specific skills addressed in the class include using active voice, creating unique descriptions to punch up stories, including suspense in writing, and using the writing process to improve story elements. This class begins with an assessment of each student’s writing ability level and ends with a campfire storytelling session for students to share their new skills
All vacations don’t have to involve going somewhere new. Today’s children can learn how to program computers to create whole new worlds to explore this summer. In Virtual Vacation students will learn basics of drag-and-drop programming and create their own unique games by the end of the course. Additional skills studied include keyboarding, internet safety, understanding programs used in school, and basic computer skills. PHC has a limited number of computers so if you are scheduling a group course students may need to bring their own. This class ends with a final day presenting the games students created.
Most children have to spend part of September remembering what they learned last year in math. With this refresher course in math students will have an advantage over their peers by reviewing in the summer so they are ready to learn new concepts the first day of school. Students will review basic mathematical concepts and practice their fact memorization. They will also learn how math can be found everywhere, even in nature. This class begins with an assessment of student ability level and concludes with a mathletic competition performance.
This summer PHC will conduct a unique ecology class to teach students about nature and give them a chance to explore. Unlike the other Summer Specialty Classes, this one will always meet at a different public nature center and give your child a chance to learn with a group of children. Each meeting will be 2 hours long and will provide a brief lesson, a hike, and a nature journal. AS a special price for Summer 2019, each class will cost $20 per child and there will be a one-time materials fee of $30 per child. You can enroll a student in as many of the classes as you would like, we just ask that you let us know which classes your child will attend. If you would like to learn more or enroll your child, please email us at PremierHSC@charter.net and ask about Summer Ecology. This will be a great learning experience that gives your child the chance to go outside and explore the world around them. Dates and locations of scheduled hikes are below, and you will be given details about meeting locations when you contact PHC.* You can sign up for one hike or a variety, the choice is yours!
